Dr. Billhymer’s orthopaedic residency gave him a broad, in-depth exposure to trauma, as he covered some of the busiest hospitals in North Jersey and New York City. Trauma became his main area of interest because he found the complex and unique characteristics of each fracture challenging, yet rewarding, to fix. He also found great fulfillment in being able to help facilitate the often dramatic recovery traumatized patients make.
The Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship at the Florida Orthopaedic Instititue in Tampa, Florida, is widely considered to be one of the best in the country. It was a great honor for Dr. Billhymer to be selected as one of only three doctors in the country to study under their internationally renowned surgeons, educators and researchers. Being at one of the busiest trauma centers in Florida, he received extensive experience in the polytraumatized patient, fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum, complex periarticular fractures, minimally invasive fracture care, and the correction of complications from these injuries (including bone infections).
In addition to his clinical skills, Dr. Billhymer comes to Great Plains Orthopaedics with a strong research background. His most recent area of study includes comparing different treatment options for trimalleolar ankle fractures. He also has participated in studies reviewing the utility of PET/CT in the evaluation of patients presenting with primary bone lymphoma, a study evaluating club foot deformity and a study reviewing the treatment of intertrochanteric hip fractures.
Dr. Billhymer is passionate about medical missions and is a member of the Christian Medical & Dental Association (CMDA). Through the CMDA, he has served populations in his native New Mexico as well as abroad with medical mission trips to Guatemala and Honduras. Dr. Billhymer and his wife have six children and two dogs. When not spending time with his family, patients or on mission trips, he enjoys traveling and classic car restoration.
